Digital VLSI Systems

Digital VLSI Systems

Over the years, the electronic industry has seen significant growth, especially in system design applications and integration technologies. The advent of very-large-scale integrations ( VLSI) has allowed thousands of integrated circuit designers to add multiple functions to a single chip. An integrated circuit (IC) is created by combining millions of MOS transistors into a single chip. This  process of creating this IC into one microchip is known as VLSI. It was introduced in the late 1970s following large-scale integration (LSI) and medium-scale integration (MSI) technologies.

Why Are Integrated Systems Important?

Integrated circuits, with their ease of design and manufacture, make it possible to create special-purpose systems such as weapons systems and training simulators which are more efficient than general-purpose computers. Electronic systems have allowed for automation replacing mechanisms that are operated mechanically.

The conception of the integrated circuit by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce created the enabling technology for innovative systems, which has changed how we live. Computers would not be as vital without this invention as they are today. VLSI is much smaller and consumes less power than the discrete components used to build electronic systems before the 1960s. Efficient operating speed, improved functional capacities and reduced costs are among the many features of Integrated circuits. However the most important advantage is its extremely high reliability for instance in computer networking, reliable protocol provides notification to the send about the transmitted data unlike unreliable protocol which does not provide any notification.

What is the difference between Analog and Digital VLSI?

While in digital VLSI, speed, power and area are primary areas of focus, in Analog Design, it is linearity, sensitivity, and SNR.

While on a fundamental level, the differences between digital and analog VLSI are scarce, there is a stark difference between the two on a conceptual level. Their application has significant differences; for instance, while one uses analog components to interact with the real world, digital VLSI components are used to implement the Boolean logic. In addition, analog designs are manual, and digital VLSI systems are automated, making testing easier than the former.

What Is The Importance Of VLSI In Modern Times?

VLSI system applications have deeply influenced all lines of business, such as instrumentation, avionics, digital signal processing, power, automation, robotics, health and the environment. Over the years, miniaturisation, portability, performance and reliability have been essential characteristics that determine the market value of a product. VLSI technology is highly dynamic, evolving to suit the demands of today’s electronic devices and systems, and is under constant change allowing the electronics industry to advance rapidly. Some of the main domains of VLSI with great potential for growth include analog design, DFT, RTL design amongst others. There is a high demand for young engineers, especially since most companies outsource roles such as design verification and testing to service companies.

Designers are constantly innovating and squeezing new features into smaller products each day. Some highly dynamic applications of VLSI include digital camera interfaces, mobile phones, avionics, flight simulators, network routers, washing machines, ship controls, and instrument landing systems, among others.

Presently VLSI is one of the most used technologies for Integrated circuits and microchip processors. With rapid technological advancement, transistors are heavily integrated into a microchip whose size has shrunk over the years but still contains an enormous amount of transistors.

Multiple steps go into manufacturing VLSI systems on microchips; VLSI systems design uses Electronic design automation (EDA)and computer-aided design (CAD) for manufacturing VLSI chips. While most of these processes are capital intensive, VLSI systems design is knowledge-intensive, making this a highly sought-after field. Recently, VLSI designers have been more significantly in demand than professionals working on chip technology.
